Idol: ANYTHING that takes the place of God
My idol… WAS makeup. I know that it may sound crazy but that’s the honest truth.
Hang with me just for a second and let me explain lol …
From February 15th through February 17th, I went to BCF National Conference which is a conference where 1,500 to 2,000 middle school, high school, and college students come together under one roof to worship God in Ridgecrest, NC. This year’s theme was “GROW”, and I had no idea that this year’s theme was foreshadowing what God would start having me to do in this season of my life.
After returning from conference God began to reveal to me that there were some things, I needed to let go of including:
1. My makeup
Last week I had some friends come by to help me cleanse my apartment, because I felt that anything that wasn’t of God needed to be removed. I wanted them to pray with my roommates and I so we could invite God’s presence back into our home. While doing so, my friend and I began to talk, and we got on the topic of my makeup (because I had a lot lol) … I began to tell her that I love makeup and on days when I’m stressed, I can sit in the mirror and do my makeup and it makes me feel better. She began to explain to me that when I’m stressed Jesus should be my first go to, not makeup or anything else. She did not make me throw any of it away, she left the decision up to me and gave room for God to reveal to me what He wanted me to do. I threw the majority of it away (for a lot of reasons that would take too much time to explain lol), because she was right. God should be our everything! Not makeup, not our parents, not money, not anything… because if I’m being honest, if I needed something big that I knew only God could do, I would not run to my makeup in that moment. Even though it is something small, God cares about the small things as well. NOTHING IS EVER TOO SMALL OR BIG FOR JESUS.
The money I used to buy those products God provided. So when I can learn to turn to Jesus with everything that I’m going through and when He decides to let me know when I can start back buying and wearing makeup, He will provide those funds AGAIN.
2. Other people’s burdens
Psalms 55:22 says, give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will NOT permit the godly to slip and fall. (NLT)
God is the only one who can carry our burdens; but I began to take on other people’s problems and hold on to them instead of releasing them to Jesus. God revealed this to me when I was diagnosed with alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that results in hair loss. What happens is that the immune system attacks the hair follicles, causing hair loss. Although this disorder is caused because of issues within the autoimmune system, I believe God allowed me to experience this as a wakeup call, because I was trying to do HIS job. As I said before, it is God who carries our burdens not me.
I decided to share this as a testimony of what I know God WILL do and what he CAN do. Google says alopecia areata IS NOT CURABLE. But MY Bible tells me that, Jesus was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be HEALED. (Isaiah 53:5 NIV). The Bible also says, “indeed the very hairs of your head are ALL numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” Luke 12:7 NIV.
God knows how many hair strands that may or may not be on my head, and He can replenish what has been lost!
May God’s grace and blessings be on your path.
