Purpose is the reason for which something is done or created, or the reason something exists. Purpose is about becoming who God created you to be. Our purpose has been placed deep inside us and sometimes we have to return to who we truly are, before we can walk boldly in it.
Have you ever been on a journey and never actually arrived at the intended destination? What happens however, is that along the way, through every bend and curve, bump and detour, you discover hidden treasure and see things that you weren’t expecting to see, had you not taken the first wrong turn. This epitomises my journey of purpose. It is along the journey that I have learnt the most valuable lessons.
I embarked on my journey of purpose when I realised that I had lost something along the way: myself!
Sometimes you think you have it all figured out: go to school, college, university, get a good job, get married, have kids, happy ever after.
However, I forgot who I was, what my dreams were and what my purpose was. It felt as though there was this unexplainable void, and eventually I hit an all-time low, as I was faced with a pit of emptiness.
My journey of purpose began with tears, silence, stillness and being surrounded by God's presence.
I had to reflect on my life and what I wanted from it. I made lists of plans and dreams, passions and interests. Evaluating what works, what worked and what no longer works.
I counted my blessings, I named them one by one. I had to listen to what God was saying and be patient.
After this process, reading the word and my lists, I was given a new direction, a new focus, some motivation, some goals: a PURPOSE. I was directed onto a new road.
I left behind fear, unrealistic expectations, people pleasing, and I discovered self-love, peace, joy and the person I had lost some time ago.
I discovered peace and calmness, and saw beauty in parts of my journey that I had previously ignored.
I had an new found appreciation, and noticed the trees, the water, the flowers and the clouds in the sky. I heard the birds tweeting, the wind blowing, and the sound of silence filled me with an inner joy.
But the true beauty in this journey is that it hasn’t ended. The intended destination is unknown, yet the hidden treasures of gratitude, love, passion, dreams, inner peace, happiness and purpose that were found on this journey, would never have been discovered, had I not taken that first wrong turn.
In order for you to accomplish the good goals God’s designed for you to achieve, you must know what He’s called you to be and do (Eph. 2:10).
